What are the benefits of using daylight bulbs?
- You will see colours much more clearly and everything will appear more life-like, ensuring you see colours accurately, anytime of the day or night which is essential for best colour matching. There are several different types of daylight simulation light bulbs but one thing that they all have in common is that they appear far ‘whiter’ than ordinary light bulbs and have a higher Ra (colour rendering). Ordinary light bulbs give off a very yellow light and although your eyes easily become accustomed to this, you do not see colours in the same way as you do in natural daylight.
- Daylight light bulbs have been shown to lessen eye strain and headaches. Scientists have found that living or working in a more naturally-lit environment improves general wellbeing and improves academic performance in students and concentration in the work place whilst also lessening fatigue.

Colour Rendering explained
Natural daylight is not just a single colour but, as we all know, contains all of the colours of the rainbow. It is this range of colours that enables our eyes to see in a way that we perceive to be natural and balanced. Light bulbs that give a good balance of colours and allow colours to be reproduced accurately are said to have good “colour rendering”. The colour rendering index (Ra) is measured on a scale of 1 to 100. Light with just a single colour has an Ra of 1 whereas that of natural sunlight is 100.
Applications:
Artists, printers and graphic designers who need to achieve excellent colour balance in their work find them ideal when their working environment lacks natural light. In shops, offices, factories, schools, dental surgeries, greenhouses, aquariums, aviaries and reptile tanks-the list of possible uses is endless. Other applications include needlework, reading, artwork, and painting, craftwork, tying fishing flies or almost any task needing good colour balance.
SAD (seasonal affected disorder) light units utilise daylight simulation lamps and tubes with a high colour temperature to lessen the effects of depression. These are particularly used in winter time when some people suffer from lack of exposure to sufficient natural sunlight.
Types of Daylight Light Bulbs:
Energy Saving
Daylight light bulbs cover the full spectrum of natural daylight, give off a bright, crisp white light and use 80% less energy than standard light bulbs. From GU10 to GLS, globe to spiral and more besides the choice of energy saving daylight bulbs is comprehensive. With a lamp life of 8000 to 10000 hours the cost of running these lamps is very low. Ideal for a number of applications including showrooms, shop displays, kitchens, bathrooms, SAD units, reception areas, conference rooms, corridors, offices, hotels, restaurants, craftwork, needlework, painting, reading and graphic design.
LED
LED daylight lamps are available in a multitude of shapes and wattages and types. From GU10s and MR16 light bulbs, to candle lamps and GLS bulbs, capsule lamps to fluorescent tubes and floodlights you will not be short of a solution for you daylight lighting requirements. LED lighting is extremely energy efficient and long lasting. The costs you will save on using daylight led light bulbs are huge; you can save up to 90 percent on running costs compared to incandescent bulbs. They have an average life of between 20,000 and 100,000 hours so you don't have to worry about changing bulbs every few months.
Fluorescent Tubes
These give out more light for a given amount of power and can be produced in a wide range of colours. Daylight fluorescent tubes can give a very white light, typically at 6000 – 6500k. Tri-phosphor or multi-phosphor lamps, which are more specialist fluorescent tubes, give an even closer daylight effect. They are designed to give an even better balanced light spectrum and can achieve colour rendering in excess of 80 or even over 90. These are known as “full spectrum” bulbs. Being energy saving, daylight fluorescent tubes have a lamp life of 10000 hours and save 80% on running costs. Applications are many and varied, depending on the lamp; shop lighting, high quality office and home lighting, under cupboard/shelf/pelmet lighting, emergency lighting, circular luminaires and special lighting.
CFL
In circumstances where it is not practical to use fluorescent tubes, another alternative is to use similar technology in a compact fluorescent such as our Full Spectrum Energy Saver. These provide an excellent quality of light with an Ra of around 85 and also give the equivalent light output to a 100W bulb yet consume only 20W. CFL daylight light bulbs have a lamp life of 8000 hours and save 80% on running costs. They are ideal for applications where excellent colour rendering is required; ceiling fixtures, security lights, signs, bollards, cooker hoods, desk lamps, fridges, bank machines, aquariums, reptile tanks, SAD Boxes, illuminated magnifying glasses, craftwork, artwork and design printing.
Incandescent
The simplest and least expensive way of producing a more natural light is to use an ordinary light bulb but filter out some of the yellow light. These bulbs, such as our range of daylight GLS bulbs, generally use a blue tinted glass. Although they give a more balanced light and hence are good for craftwork, they do give off slightly less light than a normal light bulb of equivalent power rating. These are however excellent value and can give very good results when colour rendition is important.
