Are spotlights energy efficient?

The energy consumption of a spotlight is dependant on its wattage and energy efficiency. LED spotlights are exceptionally efficient, saving up to 90% of energy compared to a halogen equivalent. If you want to buy a spotlight that requires bulbs, we recommend you use LED bulbs as opposed to halogen. LED bulbs last many times longer than halogen alternatives and reduce replacement costs over their lifetime. For example, a halogen GU10 has an average lamp life of around 2000 hours whereas, a LED GU10 can reach up to 50,000 hours of lamp life. If your looking for something more high-tech, then a PIR sensor or solar spotlight may be the most energy-efficient option.

Do you need an electrician to install spotlights?

We recommend that you have a fully qualified electrician install any lighting products that you purchase from BLT Direct.

Are downlights the same as spotlights?

Downlights and spotlights are similar light fittings that give a directional light. Downlights derive their name from their direction of light, which is only downward. Spotlights often have adjustable heads and can be moved or directed in any way that is needed, making them more versatile and used in areas where frequent light changes are required. Downlights can only be installed on ceilings, with recessed and surface-mounted options available. Spotlights are often installed on walls, ceilings, and even tabletops where they can be rotated to any angle to create the desired effect. Please note that some websites use downlights and LED ceiling lights interchangeably so it is best to check exactly what you want before purchasing.

Where can you use spotlights?

Spotlights are often used as task lighting, illuminating desks or working surfaces with directional light, aiding practical work. They can be used as mood lighting, where they serve to accentuate the main features of a room such as paintings or art pieces. Perfect for art galleries, garden effect lighting and domestic or commercial areas, spotlights are a versatile light fitting that will improve any type of environment. They can also be used as general lighting in living rooms, kitchens and as bathroom lights. If you are looking to use your spotlights outdoors, you will need an IP Rated spotlight with a rating of at least IP54.

What is an adjustable spotlight?

An adjustable spotlight is a light fitting that can be rotated in a wide range of angles. Ceiling spotlights are often the most adjustable as they are attached to a base like a bar or a plate, allowing for full 360-degree rotation. This rotatability gives you the option for multiple directions, allowing you to choose the best angle for your light or highlight a particular area within a room. If you prefer less directional lighting, a wide beam angle spotlight is better suited. Wide beam spotlights provide light at a wider angle, illuminating more space per spotlight and can be used for more general lighting.
