Are G4 LED bulbs dimmable?

Not all G4 LED bulbs are dimmable.  If you are looking to purchase a G4 LED bulb that is dimmable you will need to make sure it states that it is a dimmable one.  This should be labelled on the box or on the website you are looking to purchase the bulb from.  You may also need to purchase a dimmable LED driver and you will need to make sure your dimmer switch is compatible with your chosen LED bulb.  We will discuss this in further details below in this FAQ.

Unlike traditional halogen bulbs, LED bulbs require specific electronic parts to control the level of brightness.  If you want a dimmable G4 LED bulb you will make sure that it is labelled as “dimmable” for it to work with a dimmer switch.  You should not use non-dimmable LED bulbs with a dimmer switch as this can cause them to flicker, buzz or not work at all.  On the other hand, if you have a dimmable bulb and you are not planning to dim the light the bulb should still work. 

Dimmer Switch Compatibility

When purchasing a dimmable G4 LED bulb you will also need to make sure that your dimmer switch is compatible.  Many older dimmer switches were designed to work with halogen or incandescent lighting and may not work properly with LEDs due to their lower wattage requirements and different material components.   If this dimmer switch is not compatible this can lead to the bulb having a limited dimming range or make it so that the lights do not turn off completely.

LED-compatible dimmer switches are specifically designed to handle the lower wattage and different electrical characteristics of LED bulbs.  Choosing a specifically made LED compatible dimmer switch will ensure the bulbs operate smoothly and functionally.  If you are unsure of which LED dimmer switch to purchase this should be clear on the manufacturer’s specifications or you can check this with your wholesaler or online retailer. Transformer/Driver Compatibility

To make sure your G4 LED bulb will dim you will also need a compatible dimmable transformer/driver.  Older style transformers were built with halogen and incandescent bulbs in mind.  This means that they may not work with LED bulbs due to their lower wattage needs.  If you choose to purchase a compatible transformer you will need to make sure it advises that it is dimmable and compatible with LED lights.  This will help to make sure that the bulb does not flicker and performs optimally.
