Are LED lights suitable for use in garages or workshops?
LED lights are highly suitable for use within garages and workshops. They are often the best choice of light to purchase due to their brightness, efficiency, and durability.
These environments typically require high levels of illumination for repairs, DIY projects, or tool use. LED lighting provides an excellent level of brightness whilst using significantly less energy than fluorescent or halogen lights. It is worth noting that the brightness of a LED bulb is measured in lumens and you should always check the LED bulb you are looking to purchase will be an appropriate brightness level. A 5W LED light for example would have the equivalent brightness of a 50W incandescent bulb.
One of the key benefits of LEDs being used in garages and workshops is their ability to instantly turn on. This may seem like it should be an obvious feature of any light but fluorescent tubes can take time to warm up or they can flicker before coming on completely, especially in colder conditions. LEDs are able to reach their full brightness immediately. LEDs perform well in low temperatures which makes them ideal for unheated garages.
The durability of LEDs is another advantage. Many LED fittings are designed to be robust and resistant to dust and impact which are both risks to lighting within a garage or a workshop. We would recommend that you use light or fittings that have an IP rating of IP65 or above for added protection.
Energy efficiency is also a major benefit of LED lighting which is especially applicable if the lights are used for extended periods of time. LEDs reduce running costs as they use less energy and require less maintenance due to their long lifespan.
When choosing LED lighting for these spaces would suggest that you:
- Opt for a daylight colour temperature (5000K–6500K) for maximum visibility.
- Choose a high-lumen output for adequate brightness.
- Consider linear LED battens or panels for even coverage throughout the space.
