Can Bathroom Lights Be Installed Above A Shower?

Yes they can but the fitting must be specifically designed for bathroom use and will have to comply with the correct electrical safety regulations.  Because the area directly above a shower is exposed to moisture, steam, and water spray, not every light fitting will be suitable.

Within the UK, bathroom lighting installations are governed by bathroom zones and IP ratings.  These help to ensure electrical fittings are safe to use in wet environments.  When the correct type of light is chosen and installed properly as per these guidelines lighting above a shower can be both safe and highly effective.

What Bathroom Zone Is Above A Shower?

The area directly above a shower is known as Zone 1 under UK bathroom electrical regulations.  Zone 1 extends from the top of the shower tray or bath and up to 2.25 metres above the floor.

This area is considered high risk because any lighting installed within this zone may be exposed to direct water spray, steam or condensation.  Because of this stricter safety requirements will apply compared to other rooms within a building.

What IP Rating Is Required Above A Shower?

The abbreviation IP stands for “Ingress Protection”.  This measures how resistant a fitting is to water, moisture, and dust.

Any lights installed above a shower should have a minimum IP rating of IP65.  You can choose a higher rating than this if you wish but you should not choose one any lower.  An IP65 rated fitting will be dust resistant and will have protection against water jets from any direction.  This makes it suitable for most shower installations.

Why Standard Ceiling Lights Are Not Suitable

Most standard indoor ceiling lights are generally not designed for wet or humid environments.  If you install a non IP rated light above a shower this can cause the light to stop working earlier due to water ingress as well as it posing a potential safety risk to anyone using the bathroom.  Even if direct splashing will be limited, steam and condensation can still damage these fittings over time if they are not the correct IP rating.

What Types Of Lights Are Commonly Installed Above Showers?

Type of Light

Benefits

IP65 Downlight

Clean modern appearance, moisture protection, energy efficiency, focused illumination

Waterproof LED Strip Lights

Flexible design to be installed in a multitude of different ways, energy efficiency, moisture protection

Where Should The Transformer Or Driver Be Installed?

For low voltage LED lighting the transformer or driver should be positioned outside of the bathroom zones or in a suitably protected location if this is not possible.  This helps to reduce moisture exposure and extend the component lifespan of the transformer or driver.

Are Bathroom Lights Above A Shower Safe?

Yes, when they are installed correctly and a suitably IP rated light is used.  Modern bathroom rated lighting is specifically designed to handle moisture, humidity, and water exposure safely.  LED bathroom lights are a particularly popular option as they are viewed to be safer than other lighting technology as they produce very little heat and consume less electricity.

When you are installing lights above a shower you must make sure that the light is properly installed and compliant with all safety regulations.  If you are unsure about this you should consult an electrician to install these lights.

What Are The UK Bathroom Lighting Regulations?

Bathroom electrical installations in the UK are governed by BS 7671 wiring regulations and Part P Building Regulations.  These regulations define bathroom zones; IP requirements for these zones and installation safety standards.  Certain bathroom electrical work may legally require inspections, certification, or for installation to be done by a qualified electrician.

Summary

Bathroom lights can safely be installed above a shower as long as the fitting is specifically designed for bathroom use and meets the correct IP rating requirements.  For the majority of shower installations within the UK lights in this area should be rated at least IP65.  This rating helps to protect lights against water spray and moisture exposure.

To ensure safety and compliance bathroom lighting installations should always follow current UK electrical regulations and ideally be installed by a qualified electrician.
