Can I swap one brand of tube for another?

Yes, you can swap one brand of tube for another but you will need to make some considerations if they are a different type of technology to each other (fluorescent to LED for example) and you will need to make sure it is compatible with your lighting fixture.

Key Considerations for Swapping Light Tubes

The single most important factor is ensuring the replacement tube is compatible with the fitting you are looking to put it into.  You will need to make sure it is the same diameter; same length and that it is compatible with your control gear (which will be within the fitting).  You will also need to make sure that you are not using a blacklight tube instead of a standard tube for an under cabinet light for example.

Compatibility Notes

Diameter

All tubes will have a T number on them such as T5 or T8.  This dictates the diameter of the tube.  You will need to make sure the replacement tube you purchase has the same T number.

Cap/Base

You will need to make sure your replacement tube has the same cap to connect into the fitting.  This will be labelled as something like G5 or G13.

Length

You will need to make sure that the tube is the same size.  It is worth mentioning that there may be some variances between brands.  This will only be by no more than a millimetre or two which should not cause an issue.  Different brands may also list the length of the tube with the pins whereas your older one may describe the length without the pins.

Control Gear compatibility

This can be the most complicated swap. You will need to check if the fixture is: Ballast-Bypass (Direct Wire) meaning that the fixture must be rewired to bypass the old ballast or if it is Ballast-Compatible (Plug-and-Play). The new tube must be compatible with the specific model of the existing fluorescent ballast. If it is LED you can check the LED tube's compatibility list against your ballast model.

In Summary

If you are replacing a standard fluorescent tube with another standard fluorescent tube of the same specifications then yes, you can swap brands easily.  Always check they are the same length; fitting and diameter.

If you are swapping your fluorescent tube for a newer LED tube, you will need to check if your fixture needs to be rewired (Ballast-Bypass) or if the new LED tube is certified to work with your existing ballast (Plug-and-Play).  Led tubes should come with a ballast compatibility sheet if they are Ballast-Bypass or this will be available on the manufacturer’s website.  Otherwise if they are the Plug and Play type they will be labelled as Retrofit being they should connect easily to your lighting fixture.
