Can I use LED strip lights under cabinets or in wardrobes?
Yes you absolutely can. LED strip lights are an excellent choice for under cabinets, inside wardrobes, and other spaces similar to these. They are one of the most popular lighting solutions for these applications due to their versatility, low profile, and high energy efficiency.
Under cabinet lighting is commonly used in kitchens as a means of providing task lighting for work and food preparation surfaces. LED strips for example can offer even illumination without leaving shadows. When they are used in wardrobes they provide clear visibility whilst giving the space a modern, high-end feel.
One of the main advantages of LED strip lights is their compact size. This allows them to be installed discreetly without taking up space. They can be mounted using adhesive backing or aluminium profiles to give the lights a more professional finish and they can be purchased at a made to order length meaning they can be tailored to the size of the space you are looking to install them into.
When installing LED strips into these areas we would suggest that you consider the following:
1. Colour temperature. What do you need from the colour of the lights?
- Warm white (2700–3000K) suitable for a softer, ambient feel
- Cool white (4000K) suitable for visual clarity and practicality
- Daylight (5000K+) suitable for when maximum visibility is needed
2. Brightness (lumens)
How bright do you need the lights to be? You should opt for a brightness level that is appropriate for the space. Kitchens for example will typically require a higher brightness level than wardrobes.
3. Power supply
Check what voltage the strips run out and choose the appropriate driver. For LED strips this will likely be 12V or 24V. You should always ensure that a driver is safely installed and accessible for maintenance.
4. Heat management
While LEDs run cool, if they overheat this can lead to them not operating as they should or failing prematurely. Using aluminium profiles will help to dissipate heat and extend the lifespan of the LED strip.
5. Sensors and controls
You may choose to connect a motion sensor or door activated switch when you are using LEDs for wardrobe lighting as a more convenient means of operating the light and to contribute towards energy savings.
To summarise - LED strip lights are a versatile and practical solution for your under-cabinet and wardrobe lighting. They are a great way to provide an energy efficient, versatile and functional means of lighting.
