Can LED strip lights be safely installed above a wood burner or fireplace?

Yes, but you will need to make sure you purchase heat-resistant LED strip lights as standard LED strip lights have an increased rate of failure when installed near high temperatures.  Heat resistant LED strips however can be safely installed above a wood burner or fireplace as they are specifically designed for high-temperature environments.  Whether or not the LED strip is heat resistant should be advised on the packaging for the strip or on the website you are looking to purchase the LED strip from.

Heat-resistant LED strips are engineered to withstand temperatures up to +60°C which makes them a reliable option for installations above fireplaces or wood burners. This allows homeowners and designers to enhance the visual appeal of either of these with a subtle source of ambient lighting without compromising on safety or the performance of the LED strip.

When you are installing LED strip lighting above a wood burner it is important to consider placement and if there is adequate ventilation. The strip should be positioned at a safe distance from direct heat exposure.  This can be done by mounting it onto a mantel or surrounding structure rather than directly above the heat source. Proper airflow will also help maintain optimal operating conditions for the LED strip.

Warm white LED strips are a popular choice for fireplace installations as they complement the natural glow of the flames and contribute towards creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. This makes them ideal for areas such as living rooms, lounges, and hospitality settings where a cosy and inviting ambience is key.

As well as the aesthetic benefits LED strips offer several practical advantages.  As they use LED technology they consume very little energy; produce a minimal additional heat, and they have a long lifespan compared to incandescent or halogen lighting options. This makes them a cost-effective solution requiring minimal maintenance for enhancing an area with a fireplace or wood burner.

It’s also important to ensure that the power supply and any connectors used with the LED strip are suitable for the environment they are going into.  Choosing high-quality components will help ensure the long-term reliability and safety of the power supply and the connectors.  We would recommend choosing accessories that are IP65 rated or above to aid with this.

In summary - heat-resistant LED strip lights are a safe and effective way to add lighting above a wood burner or close to a fireplace. By choosing the right heat-resistant product and making sure you follow the proper installation guidelines you can achieve a stylish and functional lighting feature that performs reliably even in increased temperatures.
