What are ground lights?

Ground lights (as the name suggests) are light fittings designed to fit into the ground and illuminate from below. They are buried beneath the surface to safely light up an outdoor area, preventing any accidents from tripping occuring. Due to being buried into the ground, they create an elegant glow that cannot be matched by another light fitting.

Where should ground lights be used?

Ground Lights can be used in a multitude of environments for commercial, domestic and retail applications to provide a stylish finish with practical illumination. Applications vary but some places you may see ground lights in use include: tree/plant/statue illumination, pathways, markers, lobbys, decking, water features, ponds, swimming pools, spa baths, dance floors, stage lighting, driveways, walkways and entrances to name but a few. There is no limit to where you can use ground lights, so as long as it is correctly installed in an outside environment with sufficient IP rating protection, ground lights can illuminate anywhere.

How long do ground lights last?

How long a ground light will last depends on the product itself, as some products last longer than others due to a multitude of factors. Ground lights with old style lamps such as

halogen lasts a small amount of time in comparison to LED ground lights, which often last between 20,000 hours and up to 100,000 hours. Regardless, ensure you read the technical specifications or the datasheet of the product so you are aware how long the ground light is expected to last.

Do outdoor lights use a lot of electricity?

The amount of electricity a light uses is dependent on the wattage, therefore, whether a light is placed indoors or outdoors has no bearing on how much electricity is consumed by the lamp. Whilst there is a belief that lights have to work harder due to being in the cold outdoors, this is simply a myth. Lights have also become less and less energy hungry in recent years due to the use of LED technology. You will find LED lights both indoor and outdoor consume less electricity compared to old style halogen and fluorescent lights.
