Do COB Strip Lights need a diffuser?
COB strip lights can be used with or without a diffuser however there are a lot of benefits to using one. A diffuser spreads it out the light so it is even creating an ideal finish when installing strip lighting that is visible.
Not every LED strip requires a diffuser, but for appearance and functionality reasons, diffusers are strongly advised. When installing normal SMD LED strips with individual diodes as spot sources of light, the use of a diffuser is almost a requirement to give an acceptable finish.
What are the COB LED strip drawbacks?
COB strips are extremely bright and even in light, but not less defective. They generate considerable excess heat above normal SMD strips, especially when driven high. Some COB strips require proprietary heat control to be able to support their lifespan. Furthermore, more low-key and glued onto the surface, they can be trickier to cut and fit than ordinary LED strips. Without a diffuser, they can create glare, which is undesirable to have when utilized for ambient lighting.
Is COB LED better than LED?
COB LEDs are better suited for applications where smooth, even illumination is required. Individual diodes and hotspots are the standard with regular SMD LEDs, but COB creates an even stripe of light, and therefore it is quite well-suited to novelty applications, cove lighting, or undercabinet lighting. However, SMD LEDs remain well-suited to applications that require discreet plops of light, flexibility, or straightforward redesign.

How are LED lights diffused?
LED lights are diffused with acrylic or plastic tubes, frosted caps, or silicone sleeves. These diffuse light and reduce glare and shiny shadows. Frosted glass, translucent paper, or even light panels, as specified by the user may be used for the same, depending on the scenario. In the case of COB LED strips, embedding in an aluminum profile with a frosted cap is the most widespread and most efficient solution.
Are COB lights brighter than panel lights?
This varies with the use. COB strips provide a smooth linear light source and are best suited for application in under-cabinet lighting, spotlights, or in coves. Panels will be more suitable for lighting a space, though, as they diffuse the light more widely and evenly over a larger surface area. For light or ambient light, then, COB can be utilized, but to light a whole space, panels are best.
How long will the COB LED strip last?
30,000 to 50,000 hours is the lifespan of high-quality COB LED strips, provided heat management is taken care of. Heat is the biggest factor determining the lifespan of the strips, and placing them inside aluminum profiles or heatsinks will increase their lifespan remarkably.
Is COB light okay in a bedroom?
Yes, COB lights will look absolutely stunning in the bedroom if installed correctly. With a diffuser on the bulb, it is an even, smooth light, perfect for unwinding. Warm white COB strips are also suitable for the bedroom as they provide warm, welcoming lighting without blinding.
Do COB LED strips give off heat?
They do heat up to the touch, though generally lower in degree than incandescent bulbs. Higher-wattage COB strips will heat up to the touch, though, and thermal dissipation via aluminum channels or heatsinks needs to be provided due to it. Proper heat management avoids damage from being created and provides brightness as well as longevity.
Do COB LEDs flicker?
Good quality COB LEDs will never flicker on a good quality power source. Flicker usually happens because of cheap drivers, loss of voltage, or bad wiring. Using a high-efficiency driver and putting it in the right place gives a firm, hard light without any sneaky flicker.
COB strips don't necessarily need a diffuser per se, but a good feature improves light quality and comfort. They are good for smooth and flat lighting, better than regular LED strips for general use, and adequate for decoration or ambiance lighting. Well-executed driver mounting and good heat dissipation are the keys to durability, and in well-executed installments, COB strips will be just right for the bedroom, kitchen, or other room needing smooth, flat lighting.
