Do You Need an Electrician to Install LED Strip Lights?

This will depend on the type of LED strip light you are looking to install, where they are being used and how comfortable you feel installing this type of light.

Understanding LED Strip Light Types

LED strip lights generally fall into two main categories: low-voltage 12V or 24V DC and line-voltage 120V AC.

1. Low-Voltage (12V/24V DC) LED Strip Lights

This type of strip is most commonly used for residential and decorative applications.

Installation Example/Type

Electrician Required?

Plug-and-Play Kits

No, as these kits plug directly into a standard UK wall outlet.  The driver is built into the kit making it a simple DIY installation job.

Connecting to Existing Outlet/Cord

No - If the power supply/driver plugs into an existing easily accessible outlet where the wiring is limited to the low voltage side this should be safe as a DIY installation.

Hardwiring to a New, Dedicated Circuit

Yes, as any work that requires you to run new AC wiring or to connect something directly to an electrical panel should be done by a qualified and licensed electrician.

Connecting to an Existing Switched AC Line (e.g., inside a cabinet)

Yes (Strongly Recommended).  As this involves handling 120V AC wires we would strongly recommend having an electrician do this as they can ensure any connections are properly enclosed and fully compliant.

2. Line-Voltage (120V AC) LED Strip Lights

These are less common in residential settings and are often used for long, continuous runs of LED strips.  You will need an electrician to install this type of strip as these strips need to be connected directly to the main AC power.  Doing this requires the expert knowledge to prevent shock, fire  and ensure full compliance.  They may also require specialised connectors and enclosures and an electrician will know what is required.
