Do You Need a LED Profile for Your LED Strip?

LED strip lights are often paired with LED profiles to help hold the profile in place and to give a professional aesthetically pleasing finish to the lights.  LED profiles are usually available in white, black or silver and covers can be added to these profiles to give a tailored finish to the LED strip lighting if it is desired.

What is LED Profile?

LED profiles are available in a variety of widths and these usually come in 1 or 2 metre lengths.  It is made from aluminium and will then be painted to be the colour you have chosen.  LED covers may be included depending on where you are purchasing them from or they can be purchased separately.

Primary Reasons to Use LED Profile

Below are some reasons you may find it useful to to have LED profile with your LED strip light:

1. Thermal Management and Lifespan Extension

LED profiles act as a heat sink to help dissipate heat meaning that they can help to extend the life and maintenance of your LED strips.  Too much heat can cause the LED components within strip lighting to degrade faster or change in colour.  A profile made from aluminium can be a great way to reduce this risk.

2. Light Diffusion and Aesthetic Finish

A diffuser cover can help to eliminate any visible "dots" to provide a smooth, continuous line.  If you have purchased a dotless LED strip you may still want to choose a diffuser cover to give the light a diffused finish and to make it appear less intense.  A profile and cover can also help to conceal any tape, wiring or drilling that needs to be done.

3. Physical Protection

A profile and diffuser can help to protect the LED strips from any dust, dirt, moisture or accidental bumps and scrapes.

4. Simplified and Versatile Installation

LED profiles can be supported with mounting brackets to make it easier to install your LED strip.  There are different types of profile available depending on where you need to install the LED strip:

  • Recessed Mounting: Slim profiles can be integrated into drywall, wood, or tile.
  • Surface Mounting: Standard profiles can be mounted almost anywhere as they fit onto any flat surface.
  • Corner/Angled Lighting: Specialized corner profiles can help you to direct light at a 45-degree angle.
