BLT Direct Welcomes LED Technology Advancement

As it’s announced that a company in Australia has taken a large, technological step forward that mean LEDs could soon be used to power a whole range of common pieces of technology, BLT Direct, who is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of lighting solutions, is celebrating the news, signalling a significant turning point for future-proofing the world.

There’s no denying that LED bulbs are a phenomenon. Taking the world by storm thanks to their ‘green’ qualities and second to none lighting, LEDs are now set to play an even larger role in daily life. BluGlass, based near Sydney, has struck deals with equipment company Veeco, as well as Philips Lighting subsidiary Lumileds, which means that its technology could be deployed by some of the biggest LED light manufacturers in the world.

Steven Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct said, “This announcement is excellent news for both the industry and the world. LEDs have long been championed as the future of the lighting industry, however this revelation just highlights how true that is. Global warming is a real issue that is facing us, and we must act now if we are to make a real difference.”

This news comes more than a quarter of a century after BluGlass’ breakthrough technology first began materialising at Sydney’s Macquarie University. The deals mean that the technology, remote plasma chemical vapour deposition (RPCVD), which is used for the production of high-efficiency devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), power electronics and concentrated solar cells, could soon be used in traffic lights, TVs, mobile phones and projectors.

BluGlass technology is unique in that it can produce gallium nitrades – a key ingredient in LEDs – at a lower temperature than other technologies. This means that the devices can be manufactured at lower cost, while also proving to be more efficient. They are also gentler to the environment thanks to decreased power.

The LED marketplace is expected to grow by 45% a year over the next decade.

Expected to reach more than $220bn as consumers focus on more efficient appliances, this could result in about 100 less fossil fuel plants. Essentially meaning that LED lighting could play a key role in decarbonising the global economy thanks to its energy saving properties.
