Handling Halogen Light Bulbs: A Safety Guide
Halogen light bulbs operate at extremely high temperatures. Because of this it is strongly advised that you should not touch the glass with your bare hands when changing over the bulb. This guidance applies to halogen light bulbs of all types.
Why You Should Not Touch Halogen Glass
1. Oil Residue and Bulb Failure
It is important not to touch the glass with your bare hands as the natural oil, salt and residue from your skin can cause a “hot spot” on the glass leading it to heat unevenly. This can lead to the structure of the bulb being weakened causing it to break, shatter or fail prematurely.
2. Thermal Burns
Halogen bulbs, particularly after being in use, can reach temperatures that can cause severe burns instantly on skin. Even if the bulb has been switched off for a short period, it may retain enough heat to still be dangerous. You should always ensure the fitting and the bulb itself have completely cooled before removing the bulb.
Safe Handling Procedure
You can follow these steps for safe and effective halogen bulb replacement:
1. Preparation and Safety:- Turn off the light switch and allow the bulb to cool down completely. This may take a few minutes depending on the size of the bulb and how long it has been on for beforehand.
2. Handling the New Bulb:- You should handle the new bulb using a clean cloth; tissue or disposable gloves. If possible you should only touch the base or the metal pins of the bulb avoiding any contact with the glass body.
3. Installation and Cleanup:- You should insert the bulb gently and in accordance with the fitting’s design (push and turn or screw in for example). If you have accidentally touched the glass body with your bare hands you can wipe the area with a clean cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. If you do this you must allow the bulb to try completely before trying to install it again.
4. Disposal:- You should dispose of the old bulb responsibly according to regulations within your area.
