Choosing the right LED reflector or PAR bulb will depend on a few different factors.  This will  include factors such as the size of your fitting; the desired light output, and what you are looking to use the lights for.   Knowing this and understanding the key features of these types of bulbs will help you to select the bulb that delivers the best performance and efficiency for your needs.

Bulb Type and Size

You should first think about the bulb type and size of bulb that you will need.  For general household lighting, reflector bulbs should be suitable.  If you decide to choose a reflector bulb you will then next need to figure out what diameter you need.  The diameter will be advised in the description of the bulb.  A R50 reflector bulb for example will have a diameter of 50mm.  If you are looking for more focused or professional lighting you should look to purchase a PAR bulb.  You will also need to make sure that you choose the right size for these bulbs as well.  This will be advised on the packaging for the bulb on or the website you are looking to purchase the bulbs from.

Brightness

Next you should consider what level of brightness you would like from the bulb.  It is worth noting that the brightness of LED bulbs are measured in lumens rather than watts.  The higher the lumens advised on the bulb the higher the brightness of the bulb will be. When replacing older incandescent or halogen bulbs with LEDs it’s important to match the lumen output rather than the wattage to achieve the desired level of illumination.

Beam Angle

Beam angle is another key factor to consider.  This refers to the angle of the beam of light that is emitted from the bulb.  You should look for a wide beam angle for general lighting and a narrow beam angle if you want to use spotlighting for specific areas. Choosing the right beam angle will ensure that the light is distributed effectively for the lights intended purpose.

Colour Temperature

Colour temperature will also play a significant role in the overall feel of a space where the light is being used. Warm white (2700K–3000K) will help to create a relaxed atmosphere and cool white (4000K) or daylight (5000K+) will provide a brighter light helping to boost energy and focus. Selecting the right colour temperature for your light can enhance both the functionality and ambience of a room.

Cap/Base Type

It is also important to check the base type of your bulb to make sure it will fit into your lighting fixture.  This will be described as E27, E14 or GU10.  Additionally, if you need the bulb to be dimmable you should make sure both the bulb and your dimmer switch are compatible with the LED bulb.

Durability and Energy Efficiency

If you are looking to use the bulb outdoors or in a high-demand environment it is important make sure you choose a durable bulb.  PAR bulbs are almost always the best choice for these applications due to their sturdy construction and weather-resistant design.  However if you need the bulb to be completely waterproof you should always make sure it is installed in a waterproof fitting.

The last factor to consider is energy efficiency and lifespan. LED bulbs use up to 10% of the wattage used by halogen or incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light.  They also have a longer average lifespan than halogen or incandescent lamps leading to savings in energy costs and long term maintenance.
