How many LEDs are in a 4ft tube?

4ft LED tubes contain small LED diodes inside of them which produce the light that we see when the tube is connected to electricity.  A 4-foot LED tube does not have a set amount of LEDs inside it as the exact count will depend on the manufacturer, brightness level, wattage, and design of the LED tube.  We can however state that most standard 4-foot LED tubes will contain somewhere between 100 and 300 individual LED diodes.

These 4ft LED tubes have been designed to act as a replacement for T8 or T12 fluorescent tubes. These LED versions are designed to provide similar or even better brightness whilst using less electricity. Instead of producing light via gas and a phosphor coating like fluorescent lamps do, LED tubes use a number of small light-emitting diodes which are mounted along an internal circuit board on the inside of the tube.

To give an example - a standard 18W to 22W 4-foot LED tube will have around 120 to 180 LED chips on average.   You will find that lower cost models may use fewer, larger LEDs to save on costs whilst premium models often use smaller, more energy efficient LEDs spread evenly across the length of the tube to provide a smoother light output leading to fewer dark spots appearing along the tube.

When we are looking at LED products brightness is usually measured in lumens rather than the wattage or the LED count.   A 4ft LED tube producing 2,000 lumens for example could have fewer high-efficiency LEDs than another tube that produces the same brightness with a larger number of lower-efficiency LEDs. This shows us that referring to the wattage or just counting the number of LEDs does not always indicate how bright the tube will be.

Manufacturers will not always state the exact number of LEDs within a tube as customers will usually be more interested in the wattage, lumens, color temperature, and the lifespan of the tube. However, you should be able to find the number of LEDs stated within the data/technical specification sheet.

To summarise - a 4-foot LED tube will typically contain between 100 and 300 LEDs.  But it is important to keep in mind that the exact number depends on design quality, intended brightness, and the type of LED chips used. Therefore, there is no established set number for how many tubes should be in a LED tube.  If you need to find out this information it should be stated within the manufacturer’s data/technical specification sheet.
