How many lumens do I need for a room?

Choosing the correct number of lumens for a room is one of the most important parts of effectively lighting that space.  The term lumens is a unit of measurement that refers to the total amount of visible light produced by a bulb or fitting.  Lumens are the best way to identify how bright something is, especially with the ever increasing development of LED bulbs becoming more and more energy efficient.

Different rooms will require different brightness levels depending on their size, function, and layout.  A bedroom for example will usually require less lumens than a kitchen and workshops or offices will often need brighter illumination still for everyday work based tasks.

As a general guide living rooms and bedrooms typically require around 100 to 150 lumens per square metre.  Kitchens and bathrooms will often benefit from 300 to 400 lumens per square metre because these spaces require clearer visibility.  Offices, garages, and workshops may require an even higher amount of lumens.

If you have or are looking to have multiple lights installed you will need to consider the total lumen amount of these lights and how the light output will be distributed throughout the room.  Many modern lighting designs make use of multiple lights to combine ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.

Ceiling height will also have an affect on lighting requirements.  Rooms with high ceilings may require brighter bulbs or additional fittings to achieve the desired illumination as light will not appear to be as bright the higher up it is.

The colour temperature of the lighting can also influence the perceived level of brightness. Cool white and daylight LEDs will often appear brighter and crisper than warm white alternatives even if they have a similar amount of lumens.

Modern LED lighting is capable of achieving a much higher level of lumens for a lower wattage.  If you are replacing older bulbs it is worth checking the lumen rating rather than wattageas this is the best way to achieve similar levels of brightness.

You may want to opt for dimmable LED lighting as this would allow you to customise the level of brightness in the room throughout the day.  Brighter light may be useful for cleaning or work that needs to be done during the day while softer lighting creates a more relaxing atmosphere in the evening.

To summarise -  The ideal level of lumens will depend on the room size, room purpose, ceiling height, décor, and personal preference.  Choosing the correct brightness will help to improve comfort, visibility, and energy efficiency throughout the home.
