How to Install a T5 LED Tube Light

Installing a T5 LED tube light can be intimidating at first but it is in fact a relatively straightforward process once you know the correct steps to follow and take the appropriate safety precautions.  T5 LED tube lights can be used in homes, offices, garages, kitchens, and commercial/business spaces.  They are an energy-efficient and long-lasting type of light, and a great way to provide bright, even illumination.  Before starting the installation you should check which type of T5 LED tube you have, as some are plug-and-play while others will require direct wiring to the electric.

  1. You should firstly make sure that you switch off the main power supply to the lighting circuit.  This is vital for your safety and will help to prevent electric shock during installation.  As an extra precaution you can use a voltage tester to confirm that there is no live current flowing to the fixture.  Once you are sure the power is off you can then gather the required tools.  This should include a screwdriver, wire stripper, drill if mounting is needed, and safety gloves.
  2. Next you should remove the old fluorescent tube light if one is already installed. To do this you need to carefully twist the tube if it is a standard fluorescent T5 tube and pull it out from the socket.  If your lighting fixture includes a ballast, you may need to check if your new LED tube is ballast-compatible or ballast-bypass.  If it is a ballast-compatible LED tube you can leave the ballast in place.  If it is a ballast-bypass type you will need to remove the ballast or disconnect it.
  3. If you are installing a new T5 integrated LED tube fixture you should begin by marking the mounting points on the wall or ceiling.  You would then use a drill to create holes if needed and fix the mounting clips on securely.  Next you can snap the T5 LED tube into the clips so that the tube is firmly held in place.  You may also find that the fixture includes a direct power input cable and a linking option that allows you to connect multiple tubes together.
  4. Now you will need to connect the wiring.  For most setups the live wire (which will be brown or red) and the neutral wire (this will be blue or black) from the power supply will need to be connected to the matching wires on the T5 LED fitting.  Some lighting fixtures also have an earth wire.  You must ensure that all connections are tight and properly insulated using terminal blocks or wire connectors.  If your T5 LED tube supports linkable installation, you can now connect these additional tubes using the provided connectors.
  5. After the wiring is complete we would highly recommend that you double check all of the connections and ensure the tube is securely mounted.  After this you can restore the power supply from the main switch and test the light. The LED tube should turn on instantly without any flickering.

If the light does not work after this you should switch the power off again and inspect the wiring connections making sure that these have all been done correctly.  Incorrect polarity, loose wires, or incompatible ballasts are a few common causes of why a T5 LED tube may not work after installing it.
