Introducing Our Range of Weatherproof LED Battens

While batten luminaires are frequently found indoors and have been manufactured to IP20 criteria for indoor use. For outdoor applications the IP65 version is required.

What is IP20?

The IP system is an international standard for determining the level of protection of an electrical item against solids and liquids. The first number in the rating refers to intrusion protection against solids while the second refers to moisture protection against liquids.

And so, an IP20 rated LED batten would offer level 2 protection against solids. This means that it will hold up well against accidental finger contact or contact with other objects measuring less than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter. However it would offer sero protection against any form of moisture, so can be used indoors only.

Introducing IP65 LED Battens

At BLT, we’ve partnered with some of the best UK brands to bring you a new option in LED lighting: weatherproof LED battens. These battens are IP65 rated. The ‘6’ means that the battens are dust-tight, and do not let any airborne particles into the housing. The ‘5’ means that it can withstand low pressure jets from all angles. Together, these factors mean that IP65 rated LED battens can be used in many different outdoor areas.

For example, IP65 weatherproof battens can be used to provide exterior illumination when attached to the underside of an open porch, in bus shelters and train stations, and at emergency meeting points outside offices and other commercial buildings. They can also be used for outdoor security purposes (an IP65 LED batten with motion sensor is best for this). They can also illuminate indoor areas that are exposed to damp, such as garages, sheds and other out buildings, car parks, warehouses, and cycle storage.

How Do Weatherproof LED Battens Work?

IP65 LED battens are typically made from transparent polycarbonate or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic polymers which are known for having natural high impact resistance. These plastics are very strong and durable, and do not corrode easily which means they last well when exposed to the elements. They’re also very rigid, so retain their structure even in very high or low temperatures. While exact operational temperatures vary, many IP65 battens can operate from -20 degrees to +40 degrees.
