The most common type of spot light bulb that’s used in houses across the UK are GU10 bulbs, but there are also other options you can choose from too including MR11, MR16, R60, R80, AR111 and many more.
Whatever type of bulb you end up on, at BLT Direct we stock a comprehensive range of all the bulbs that you could need. Whether you’re replacing your old halogen bulbs, or just looking to upgrade you currently have, we have all the different models to help solve your lighting needs.

What is a spot light bulb?

A spot light bulb is a type of lamp that is typically mounted onto some type of surface or recessed fixed onto the wall or ceiling. They provide multiple beams of light, which makes them excellent to shine a light down onto a desk or to provide light while you’re preparing and cooking your evening meal.

Each light provides a focused beam that can direct light up any area and, although all the lights will be fixed to one singular unit, you can adjust the individual lights to point in different directions. This provides a flexible solution to many lighting needs that you may have around the home and office.

You may commonly hear the terms spot light and downlights mentioned interchangeably, but don’t go thinking that they are the same thing as there are a few differences to be aware of.

The main difference is that downlights are a light fitting that can take spot light bulbs. Downlights also consist of just one bulb or come as a complete integral unit.

What bulbs go in spotlights?

Spotlight bulbs are specifically designed to include a reflective surface that helps to create a narrow or wide beam angle, so you should be conscious about the types of bulbs that you’re putting into your light fitting.

You can buy spot light bulbs as incandescent, halogen and LEDs, with E14, E27, B15, B22, GU10, and G53 bases.

Are all spotlight bulbs the same size?

Spotlight bulbs are not all made the same, they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes so if you’re looking to replace a current fitting, it’s important to measure your existing bulb before you buy anything.

Traditional GU10 bulbs are 53mm in height and around 50mm in diameter, although you can also get models that go up to 75mm long.

As a rule, the more powerful the spotlight bulb is, the bigger it will be.

Can you replace spotlight bulbs?

Yes, it should be relatively simple to change and replace spotlight bulbs. If you’re using a GU10 bulb, these run on mains voltage so it will just be a straight swap when it comes to the time when you want to install a new bulb.

If you’re upgrading your current halogen lights to LED, it’s also a simple process as most LED spot light bulbs that are currently being manufactured have been designed to retrofit existing light fittings.

The only thing you need to do is take your current bulb out of the light fitting and then place your new bulb in its place – it’s really as simple as that.

What type of light is a spotlight?

Today, many spotlights use LED lights, but they still can come in incandescent and halogen bulbs. LED technology is a lot more environmentally-friendly compared to earlier light bulb models, but they’re also a lot cheaper to run too.

LED lights consume a lot less electricity than older models and they tend to last longer, providing you with the perfect lighting in your home for years to come – depending on how often you use them. You don’t have to worry about buying new bulbs and replacing them every few months with LED bulbs either which is why they are such a popular option.

If you’re wondering about spotlight dimmable option is available, you’re in luck too as you can get bulbs that can create the perfect mood by adjusting the brightness.

Many online websites now no longer sell older models, as they are being phased out in most countries, so it’s also much easier to get your hands on a LED spot light bulb compared to other, older, products that don’t use this technology.

What wattage is a spot light bulb?

LED Spot light bulbs usually come in a range of wattages from 1-15 Watts but, remember that wattage is no longer as accurate when it comes to representing brightness. This is because LED bulbs use a lot less energy than incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light. Instead, it’s best to look at Lumens. The higher the Lumens (lm), the brighter the light.

What colour bulbs are spot light bulbs?

Spot light bulbs come in a very broad range of colours, so you really get a lot of choices when it comes to finding the right lighting solutions for your home.

Ranging from natural tones that mimic daylight, to bright colours, there are plenty of options that are available to you. Each different style of light can create a totally different atmosphere and vibe in any room you place them in, so choosing the right colour for you is a very important consideration.

Here are some of the most popular colour options:

  • Warm white: Warm white is great for living areas and communal spaces as the softer shades are much easier on our eyes. It’s much more relaxing and can soften the skin tone as it gives off a warm orange/yellow light.
  • Cool white: If you’re looking to achieve a more modern and fresh look, you may decide to go with cool white. This gives off a clean, white light that’s perfect for places like kitchens and bathrooms where you want to be able to see everything you’re doing clearly.
  • Daylight: This colour bulb will mimic the light that you’d normally see outside, creating a comforting and relaxing space.
  • Coloured LED: If you want to get a bit experimental with the lighting in your house, you can choose from a range of coloured LED options. From reds and yellows to oranges and greens, there are plenty of options for you to choose from.

Where can spot light bulbs be used?

You can use spot lights wherever you want inside, they can be installed safely in any light fitting that takes them and will instantly bring new life and renewed energy into your home. If you’re thinking about installing your spotlight bulb outside, ensure the light fitting is rated correctly, you may want to be careful to install it somewhere that is partly sheltered from the rain, wind, and other elements it may come into contact with.

Spotlight bulbs do work best when they’re placed in areas where you need more focussed lighting to light up tasks you’re working on, like above a desk, in the kitchen, or in the garage.
