What IP Rating Is Needed For Outdoor Soffit Lighting?

Outdoor soffit lighting should have a minimum IP rating of IP44 but IP65 is recommended as this will offer better long term protection against the majority of different types of weather. Determining the correct IP rating needs to be determined by how exposed the lighting will be to these different types of weather.

Soffit lights are commonly installed underneath roof overhangs, porches, canopies, and exterior eaves.  While these locations have some degree of shelter they can still be exposed to outdoor elements such as rain, condensation, insects and sudden temperature changes.

Choosing the correct IP rated fitting will help to ensure that the lights remain safe, reliable, and resistant to weather damage over time.

What Is An IP Rating?

IP stands for “Ingress Protection.”  An IP rating gives us a measurement of how resistant an electrical fitting is to dust, moisture, and water ingress.

IP ratings will always contain two numbers.  Some examples of this include; IP44, IP65, or IP67.  The first digit of this rating relates to protection against solid objects and dust.  The second digit relates to water resistance.

For outdoor soffit lighting it is the second number that is usually the most important as it determines how well the fitting can handle moisture and water exposure.

Is IP44 Enough for Outdoor Soffit Lighting?

In many sheltered soffit installations, yes.  As long as the soffit area will be well shielded from direct rainfall.

IP44 is generally considered to be the minimum suitable rating for most outdoor soffit lights because it provides protection against splashing water and small solid objects.  This makes it suitable for:

  • covered porches,
  • sheltered soffits,
  • entrance canopies,
  • protected eaves.

When Is IP65 Better?

IP65 is often recommended for greater weather protection which is particularly required for more exposed outdoor locations.  An IP65 rated fitting is dust tight and protected against jets of water.  This will make it more resistant to rain and moisture ingress.

IP65 rated soffit lighting is often preferred for:

  • exposed rooflines,
  • coastal properties,
  • windy areas,
  • locations with frequent rain.

Many installers will choose IP65 rated lights for all soffit lighting as a safer long term option even in partially sheltered areas.

What Types Of Lights Are Commonly Used In Soffits?

Popular outdoor soffit lighting options include:

  • LED downlights
  • recessed spotlights
  • GU10 fittings
  • integrated LED soffit lights
  • low profile exterior lighting

LED lighting is especially popular because it uses very little energy compared to other types of lighting technology, has a longer lifespan and it produces relatively little heat.

What Colour Temperature Is Best For Outdoor Soffit Lighting?

This will depend on the desired appearance for your lights.

Warm White (2700K–3000K) creates a softer and warmer light which is preferred for more relaxed and welcoming environments.  In terms of soffit lighting this is commonly used for front entrances, patios and residential properties.

Cool White (4000K–5000K) creates a bright and cleaner light which is often used for security lighting, commercial buildings and contemporary exterior lighting.

Can Soffit Lights Help With Security?

Soffit lights can be used as a part of security lighting.  They can be used to improve visibility, illuminate entrances, deter intruders, and aid visual clarity from CCTV cameras.  Motion sensor soffit lights are especially popular for security applications.

Should Outdoor Soffit Lighting. Be Installed By An Electrician?

Soffit light should almost always be installed by an electrician.  This is because outdoor electricals are required to comply with UK wiring regulations to make sure that it is safely protected against moisture, cable damage, and potential damage from the weather.

A qualified electrician can make sure that suitable IP rated fittings are used, correct cable protection is installed and that any outdoor circuits are RCD protected.

Summary

Outdoor soffit lighting should have a minimum IP rating of IP44 but IP65 rated fittings are often recommended for improved weather resistance and longer term durability.  Choosing the correct IP rating will depend on how exposed the soffit is to rain, moisture and condensation.
