What is a T5 LED Tube Light?
A T5 LED tube light is a slim energy-efficient lighting option that has been designed to replace T5 fluorescent tube lights. The term “T5” refers to the diameter of the tube. The “T” refers to the tubular shape of the light and the “5” refers to the diameter of the tube being 5/8 of an inch. These types of light can be found in offices, kitchens, garages, workshops, retail displays, schools, and under-cabinet lighting. They are an ideal option for many environments as they provide a bright, consistent source of illumination while consuming up to 50% when compared to fluorescent tubes.
Fluorescent T5 tubes use gas and a ballast to produce light. T5 LED tube lights however use LED diodes which are much more efficient and environmentally friendly. LEDs convert more electricity into light rather than heat. These factors mean that using a T5 LED tube will lead to lower energy bills and reduced maintenance costs over time as they are easier to dispose of and have a longer lifespan on average.
A fluorescent T5 tube on average can last around 8,000 to 15,000 hours. A T5 LED tube however can last 30,000 to 50,000 hours or more. This reduces the need for the tube to be replaced over time. This is especially impactful in workplaces where these lights are used for many hours a day.
Another great benefit of T5 LED tube lights also turn on instantly without flickering or requiring a warm-up time. It has been found that fluorescent tubes can sometimes flicker; buzz, or take time to reach their full brightness.
There are two main types of T5 LED tube lights that are available to purchase. This being replacement tubes and integrated light fixtures. Replacement tubes will fit into existing T5 fluorescent fittings while integrated fixtures are complete LED units with built-in housing and direct wiring. It is worth mentioning for replacement tubes that some are ballast-compatible, while others require ballast bypass to connect them directly to mains power.
Disposal of T5 LED tube lights is easier and safer for the environment as they do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent tubes. This means that there is a reduced health risk if the tube breaks. T5 LED tubes also produce less heat, which is another way in which the tubes are safer to use as well as reducing costs for keeping things cool in indoor spaces.
You can purchase these lights in different color temperatures. The most popular ones that are available include warm white, cool white, and daylight. Warm white is preferable for a softer atmosphere suitable for homes, while cool white and daylight are often preferred in offices and workspaces where clear visibility is important.
In terms of their design T5 LED tubes are slim and compact which makes them ideal for tight spaces such as shelves, cabinets, and display units. Many models have the option of linking them together as well allowing several lights to be connected together for continuous lighting.
To summarise - A T5 LED tube is a slim energy efficient light tube which can be purchased in a variety of colours including warm white to daylight. They are suitable for a wide variety of environments and highly energy efficient, especially in the long term.
