What is the difference between edge-lit and back-lit LED panels?

Edge-lit and back-lit LED panels are two common types of flat panel lighting.  LED panels are often used in offices, commercial spaces, and modern homes.  While they may look similar at first, they differ in their construction, performance, and what they are used for.

Edge-lit LED panels

An edge-lit panel will have LEDs positioned around the edges of the panel.  The light from these is directed inwards and distributed across the surface using a light guide plate.  This design allows for very thin and lightweight panels which makes them ideal for suspended ceilings or installations that have limited space.

Some advantages of edge-lit LED panels include:

  • Slim design
  • Lightweight
  • Even light distribution

Back-lit LED panels

Back-lit panels have LEDs that are mounted directly behind the diffuser which spread the light evenly across the panel surface. This design allows for this type of panel to have a higher brightness and efficiency as there is less light loss compared to edge-lit panel lighting systems.

Advantages of back-lit panels include:

  • Brighter output
  • Better efficiency
  • More consistent light distribution
  • Improved longevity

They are often slightly thicker than edge-lit panels but they can offer superior performance in demanding environments.

What panel should I choose?

Choosing between the two will depend on what you need from the panel lights:

  • You should use edge-lit panels if you have limited space and if aesthetics of the panel are a priority.
  • You should use back-lit panels if brightness and efficiency are the top priority.

Both types of panels are available in various colour temperatures and sizes meaning this would not affect whether or not you choose an edge-lit or a back-lit panel.
