What LED Bulb Replaces a 100W Bulb?

One of the most common questions people ask when switching to energy-efficient LED lighting is what LED bulb would be a sufficient replacement for a 100W incandescent or halogen bulb.  Understanding LED wattage equivalents to incandescent/halogen bulbs is important because LED technology is able to produce the same amount of brightness using a much lower wattage.

For incandescent and halogen lighting brightness was often associated with wattage.  Many people understandably assumed that a higher wattage meant a brighter bulb as this was the case when incandescent and halogen lighting was at the height of its popularity.  However, wattage is the unit used to measure energy consumption, not the level of light output.  With LED technology the focus has shifted to lumens.  This is because lumens is the unit of measurement used to measure brightness.

A standard 100W incandescent bulb will produce around 1,500 to 1,700 lumens.  To achieve a similar brightness with LED lighting you would need to choose a LED bulb rated between 13W and 18W.  The wattage can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and efficiency of the bulb.  The equivalent wattage should always be advised on the packaging of the bulb or on the website you are purchasing the bulb from.

For the majority of households a 15W LED bulb is commonly considered the direct replacement for a 100W traditional bulb.  This bulb provides a comparable level of brightness whilst using a fraction of the electricity required by incandescent and halogen bulbs.

It is easy to grasp that the savings will build up over time if you change over to a bulb that is using less than 20% of the power of your previous bulb.  If you are using your bulb for several hours a day, replacing a 100W incandescent bulb with a 15W LED can reduce your lighting energy consumption by more than 80%.  Over time this difference will become visibly clear on your electricity bills.

LED bulbs are available in a wide variety of shapes and fittings.  Common replacements for 100W bulbs include standard GLS bulbs with E27 or B22 caps; GU10 spotlights, candle bulbs, and globe type bulbs.  Before purchasing a new LED bulb it is important to check the fitting type and dimensions to ensure it is compatible with your existing fixture.  You can do this by checking that the base of the bulb looks the same and making sure that the cap type matches (E27, B22 or GU10 for example).

Colour temperature is another important factor to consider when you are replacing a 100W incandescent/halogen bulb.  LEDs are available in several light tones:

  • Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) creates a cosy, traditional atmosphere.  If you are looking to match the colour of the incandescent or halogen bulb you had previously you should choose this one.

  • Cool white (around 4000K) offers a cleaner, brighter appearance.  This is recommended for us in bathrooms or kitchens.

  • Daylight (5000K–6500K) produces a crisp and energising light that is often used in workspaces or factories.

You will also need to consider the possibility of dimming if your existing light fitting uses a dimmer switch.   If you are looking to replace a bulb that you have been using with a dimmer switch you will need to make sure that you purchase a dimmable LED bulb.   This is because not all LED bulbs are dimmable.  You will also need to make sure that the dimmer switch is compatible with the LED that you purchase.  This should be covered under the manufacturer’s details for the bulb and the dimmer switch.

Smart LED bulbs are another option for LED lights if you are interested in purchasing a bulb that has multiple options of colour and brightness that can be changed at a whim.  Many smart bulbs will provide the same level of brightness as a 100W bulb whilst offering other customisable lighting options via an app that can be operated by your phone or other smart device.

To summarise - the best LED replacement for a 100W bulb will be a high-quality LED that produces around 1,500–1,700 lumens with a wattage of approximately 13W–18W.  This will provide a similar brightness level as a 100W bulb with a dramatically lower energy usage, longer lifespan, and one that requires less maintenance.
