Where can I cut a COB LED strip?

Many COB LED strips are available in a variety of lengths and you may find that you need a smaller size or a few smaller pieces.  With all standard COB LED strips there are small cut points usually placed every 50mm.  You must use these cut points to cut the LED strip.  If you do this at any other point on the strip you will likely damage the LEDs inside of it.

What happens to COB LED strips if they are cut outside of the designated cutting points?

If the LED strip is cut in the wrong place it will cause the circuit to disconnect.  The cut points on the COB LED strip have been designed so that a connected circuit will stay working.  If you cut outside of these lines the circuit will no longer be connected as the right and left sides will not be able to reconnect once they are joined onto other wiring.

A step by step guide on cutting COB LED strip

  1. Measure the strip and figure out how much you need:  As the saying goes - “Measure twice and cut once.”  Take the time to be sure on how much LED strip is required before you make the cut.
  2. Look for the cut marks: The cut marks on the strip are normally indicated by a small thin line in black or copper.  Otherwise they may be shown by a small scissors icon at each cutting point.
  3. Make the cut: This is going to vary depending on which type of strip you have purchased.   If you are purchasing the strip directly from us the cut points will be on the front for the 8-10mm strip and they will be on the rear for the 4mm strip underneath the self adhesive backing.
  4. If you are soldering the COB LED strip: Again, if you are purchasing the LED strip directly from us you will need to do this from the front for 8-10mm width COB LED strip and from the rear from 4mm strip.  If you are using IP65 or above rated tape and need to solder or cut it you will need to expose the copper pads which can be done by removing the silicone layer with a knife or pair of scissors.

Important Note: When connecting any wires related to COB LED strip you must always make sure you have connected the red to the positive side and the black to the negative side.
