Why do some LED bulbs buzz or hum?
A buzzing or humming sound from an LED bulb can be frustrating and distracting. More so when it is in quiet environments like a living room or a bedroom. You would understandably assume that it is a fault within the bulb itself but it is in fact more likely to be an issue with electrical compatibility.
One of the most common causes of this happening is the use of an incompatible dimmer switch. Traditional dimmers were designed for use with incandescent bulbs and these operate differently to LED bulbs. When these older style dimmers are paired with LED bulbs this can create electrical instability which causes vibrations within the bulb’s internal components. It is this vibration that produces the audible buzzing/humming noise.
Another frequent cause of this is the LED driver. The LED driver is responsible for regulating power to the bulb. Lower-quality drivers may produce a noise when converting electricity, particularly if the power supply is inconsistent. This can become more noticeable when the light is dimmed or when multiple bulbs are connected to the same circuit.
Loose fittings or poor wiring can also be a contributing factor. If a bulb is not securely seated within the socket or if there are loose connections within the fixture this can cause small electrical arcs or vibrations that create noise.
To resolve or prevent buzzing coming from your LED lights you should:
- Use LED-compatible dimmer switches, making sure that the type of dimming is compatible with the LED light you are looking to connect it to.
- Choose high-quality LED bulbs from reputable manufacturers
- Ensure all fittings and connections are secure and not loose
In some rarer cases it is possible that the issue may also be related to the electrical supply itself, particularly in older properties with outdated wiring.
It is worth mentioning that while buzzing is usually harmless it can indicate inefficiency or incompatibility which could lead to the bulbs or the connected components not lasting as long as they should. Finding the root cause will help you eliminate the noise and improve the overall performance and lifespan of your lighting.
