How do I store spare light bulbs safely to maximise their lifespan?
It is important to properly store spare light bulbs so that you can be sure they remain in good condition and that they will perform as expected when you need them. While LED bulbs are becoming ever more durable as the technology develops they can still benefit from careful handling and appropriate storage.
The first two factors to consider are temperature and environment. Bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place and kept away from extreme temperatures or humidity. Excessive heat or moisture can damage the internal components of bulbs, particularly in LED bulbs that include electronic drivers.
It’s always best to keep bulbs in their original packaging as this will provide protection against dust, impact, and static. If you are not able to use the original packaging a padded container or box should be sufficient to protect the bulb from damage.
You should avoid stacking bulbs loosely as this can lead to scratches, cracks, or broken components. This applies more so for glass bulbs or delicate fittings.
Another factor to consider is if the bulbs will be exposed to direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure can degrade the material components over time, particularly plastics and any seals.
As an extra note safety is also important when you are storing your LED bulbs. It is important to keep bulbs out of reach of children and store them away from heavy items that could fall and cause damage.
To summarise - When LED bulbs are stored properly this will help to make sure they have a long shelf life. You can do this by making sure they are stored in a cool and dry place away from any direct sunlight and safely packaged. You should always use the oldest stock first when you are able to to ensure optimal performance for your lighting.
