When Do the Clocks Change?

Your Complete Guide to British Summer Time & Home Lighting

Published by BLT Direct | Lighting Experts Since 2005

Every year, millions of people across the UK ask the same question: when do the clocks change? Whether you're worried about losing an hour's sleep or you're wondering how the shift in daylight will affect your home and garden, we've got everything you need to know — plus expert advice on making the most of the changing light with the right lighting solutions.

When Do the Clocks Go Forward in 2026 and 2027?

In the UK, the clocks go forward by one hour at 1:00am on the last Sunday of March, marking the start of British Summer Time (BST). They go back one hour at 2:00am on the last Sunday of October, returning to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

2026 Clock Changes

  • Clocks go FORWARD: Sunday 29th March 2026 at 1:00am (lose 1 hour)
  • Clocks go BACK: Sunday 25th October 2026 at 2:00am (gain 1 hour)

2027 Clock Changes

  • Clocks go FORWARD: Sunday 28th March 2027 at 1:00am (lose 1 hour)
  • Clocks go BACK: Sunday 31st October 2027 at 2:00am (gain 1 hour)

A useful memory aid: "Spring forward, Fall back" — in spring the clocks go forward; in autumn they go back.

Why Do the Clocks Change?

British Summer Time was first introduced during World War One to maximise productivity during daylight hours and reduce coal consumption. Today, the primary benefits are longer evenings in summer, energy savings, and improved road safety as people travel during daylight rather than darkness.

The official time change is governed by the Summer Time Act 1972 and is observed across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

How Does the Clock Change Affect Your Lighting?

When the clocks change, so does the amount of natural light available during the morning and evening. This has a very practical effect on your home, garden, and security lighting — and it's the perfect time to review your lighting setup.

Darker Evenings in Winter: Time to Check Your Outdoor Lighting

When the clocks go back in October, evenings suddenly get much darker, much earlier. If you rely on manually switched outdoor lights, you may find yourself arriving home in complete darkness. This is why automated lighting solutions are so valuable.

Our range of outdoor wall lights is designed to handle the transition effortlessly, keeping pathways, driveways and doorways well lit regardless of the season.

Lighter Evenings in Summer: Maximising Natural Light

When the clocks go forward in March, we gain an extra hour of evening daylight. This is great news for your garden, but it can mean that lights you previously relied on for early evening illumination are now switching on when it's still bright — wasting energy and reducing bulb life.

Dusk Till Dawn Lighting: The Smart Solution to Clock Changes

One of the best investments you can make for your home's exterior lighting is installing dusk till dawn lights. These clever fittings use a built-in photocell sensor to automatically detect ambient light levels and switch on at dusk and off at dawn — regardless of what the clock says.

This means your dusk till dawn lights automatically adjust to both the spring and autumn clock changes, as well as to natural variations in day length throughout the year. There's no need to manually reset timers — the sensor does it all for you.

Benefits of dusk till dawn lighting:

•        Automatically adjusts to seasonal changes in daylight hours
•        Reduces energy waste by only activating when genuinely dark
•        Improves home security by ensuring consistent night-time illumination
•        Requires no manual intervention after installation

PIR Motion Sensor Lights: Smart Security All Year Round

Another excellent option for coping with changing light levels is a PIR motion sensor light. PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors detect movement and trigger the light to switch on, making them ideal for driveways, side passages, and back gardens where you need light on demand rather than all night.

During the longer, lighter summer evenings, PIR lights won't waste energy switching on unnecessarily. During darker winter months, they provide an instant burst of bright light exactly when and where it's needed — an effective deterrent for intruders too.

Garden Lighting and the Clock Change

The spring clock change is the perfect trigger to refresh your garden lighting ready for the outdoor season. Longer evenings mean more time spent outside — on the patio, around the BBQ, or in the garden — and the right lighting can transform the experience.

Solar Garden Lights

Solar garden lights are another smart choice that adapts automatically to the seasons. Powered entirely by sunlight, they charge during the day and illuminate your garden at night. As days lengthen in summer, they charge more efficiently and provide longer run times.

Festoon & String Lights

For al fresco dining and entertaining, festoon lights create a warm, welcoming ambience that makes the most of lighter summer evenings. Pair them with a simple plug-in timer to automate switching as the season progresses.

Garden Spike & Post Lights

Illuminate pathways, borders and feature planting with garden spike lights. These low-level fittings add depth and interest to your outdoor space and can be fitted with photocell adapters for automatic operation.

Security Lighting and Shorter Days

The October clock change brings significantly shorter days, and with it an increased risk of opportunistic crime during the long, dark evenings. Well-planned security lighting is one of the most effective and affordable ways to deter intruders and give yourself peace of mind.

Our recommended security lighting solutions include:

•        LED floodlights — powerful, energy-efficient illumination triggered by movement
•        Bulkhead lights — robust, vandal-resistant fittings for consistent overnight illumination
•        Outdoor lights — including adjustable spotlights that cover wide areas and are simple to install

Indoor Lighting Tips for the Dark Winter Months

It's not just outdoor lighting that needs attention when the clocks go back. Shorter days can have a real impact on your mood, productivity and wellbeing indoors. Here are a few ways to brighten up your home as the evenings draw in:

•        Switch to warmer LED bulbs: A warm white (2700K) tone creates a cosy, relaxed atmosphere ideal for autumn and winter evenings. Browse our LED Light Bulbs range.
•        Use dimmer switches: Adjust your lighting level to suit the time of day and activity. Pair with dimmable LED bulbs for full flexibility.
•        Add task lighting: Desks, kitchen worktops and reading areas all benefit from targeted task lighting when natural light is limited.
•        Consider SAD lighting: Light therapy lamps that mimic natural daylight can help counter the effects of reduced sunlight on mood and energy levels during the darker months. Browse our Daylight Lamps and Tubes

Setting Lighting Timers After the Clock Change

If you use plug-in or hard-wired timers for your indoor or outdoor lights, don't forget to update them after the clocks change. Analogue timers in particular will need manual adjustment, while many digital timers have a BST/GMT setting that can be toggled automatically.

For a truly hands-off approach, consider switching to smart wifi lighting controls that sync with your smartphone and adjust automatically for daylight saving time.

Energy Saving and the Clock Change

British Summer Time was originally intended to reduce energy consumption, and modern LED lighting technology takes that principle even further. By combining energy-efficient LED fittings with smart controls — photocell sensors, PIR detectors and programmable timers — you can dramatically reduce your electricity bills throughout the year.

At BLT Direct, our entire range is focused on energy efficiency. Whether you're upgrading a single outdoor fitting or overhauling your home's entire lighting scheme, you'll find everything you need at www.bltdirect.com.
